Water buffalo swim across Moti Jheel behind Moti Jeel Palace also known as Azmatgarh Palace just off of Mahmoorganj Road in Varanasi, India. In the background, trash is set on fire. On the right side of the photo the All India Radio tower is visible.
Two times a day these water buffalo make this trek to a small pond where they are washed. The Moti Jheel lake is slowly drying up. Varanasi used to be covered with small lakes that were resplenished during the monsoon by an overflowing Ganges river. Remnants of the lakes can be seen however, wherever there is a kund with steps. Moti Jheel is one of the few remaining bodies of water that has not either been drained or enclosed with steps.
