This shop is awesome! It's in Lanka halfway down on the right as you go towards the university. There are very few shops in which women work in Varanasi, but this is one of them. Rhaki (pictured right) is faithfully running the shop with her husband Tej Shanker day in and day out. I've been frequently their pharmacy since the beginning when I discovered the cheap anti-heart burn medication Omeprazole. That's great stuff to combat the spicy food. I also buy oral rehydration salts (ORS for short) from this shop. That stuff is great to combat dehydration headaches and I can say that after several years of drinking ORS, I haven't had headaches like I used to. Paracetamol (Tylenol) is the most common pain reliever available. But I have found that it doesn't take headaches or pain away as good as Brufen (Ibuprofen). This red colored tablets comes in 200, 400 and 600 mg sizes. If you have a c old that just won't go away, Amoxacillin is a great antibiotic.
If you have diarrhea and stomach cramps, then you should take Ciprofloxacin. I usually take two capsules/tablets at once when I know I need an antibiotic. Then I take one at night and one in the morning until a whole strip is completed (ten tablets). Metronidazole (Flagyl) is used for cases of Gardia. One time I was staying at a guesthouse and their water filter broke. We all drank dirty water for several days. One night I had really bad diarrhea and got quite dehydrated. I went to the hospital the next day and they put me on an IV. Later, they prescribed cipro and flagyl together which is a huge 1000 mg pill. I had to take ten pills of it and by the end I was totally wiped out. So keep your water clean and your hands clean (I use the Himalayan brand hand sanitizer). I recommend having all of these medicines on hand just in case you wake up in the middle of the night and know something is wrong. The shop just to left is also family owned and run by Tej Shanker's brother. It is equally good. It's your decision which one to go to as there is no difference in product. What I have heard from people is that these are the two best shops in town. Give them a try!
