Rani Kuan, Chowk, Varanasi
Ganpati has been in operation producing elaborately embroidered umbrellas for about 150 years. That is their historical business, but now they have become wholesalers in silk saris and silk sherwanis. As they are wholesalers, they don't have the big expense of paying for street level shops. They are tucked away in Rani Kuan which is accessed from the Chowk crossing. If you are standing in front of the police station at Chowk, you just walk towards the alleys on the opposite side of the street. Just a little way down Rani Kuan alley on the left, you will see a sign hanging on the second floor of a building. That's your sign that you should enter the hallway to the Ganpati shop--found on the left up some stairs. It is a small place so watch your head as the ceiling fan whirrs quite low. Sharad and Hemant Shah are brothers who own Ganpati. They do wholesale in all kinds of Sari and Sherwani and they give a very good price.
